Things To Do - Richmond
At the western end of one of the District Lines is the wonderful Richmond. Set upon the Thames it is an idyllic spot to enjoy a day in London. Added to that Richmond Park is a short walk away meaning everything is covered to make the most of the day.
We have several Trambles in the area. This post focusses on the one that takes in the best spots in the town and along the riverside.
One of the best spots to sit with a picnic is on Richmond Green, especially in the summer. With The Cricketers (The Green, Richmond TW9 1LX | 020 8940 4372 | Website) and The Princes Head (28 The Green, Richmond TW9 1LX | 020 8940 1572 | Website) located nearby it is a great spot for a beer too.
Across the Green is Richmond Palace, a royal residence that stood in the 16th and 17th centuries. Peer at the fine architecture or read some of the history.
The walk really comes alive once you weave your way down to the riverside. Beautiful views across the Thames, boats and canoes streaming past, it is an amazing setting.
It is a great chance to stop, grab a drink and watch the world go by. We recommend The White Cross (Riverside, Richmond TW9 1TH | 020 8940 6844 | Website) with it's large terrace or the more humble Tide Tables Cafe (2 The Arches, Richmond TW9 1TH | 020 8948 8285 | Website) which can be found under the first bridge you come to. A little further along is Stein's (Towpath, Petersham Rd, Richmond TW10 6UX | 020 8948 8189 | Website) Richmond's very own Bavarian bar and restaurant.
the terrace gardens
Once we have walked the riverside our Tramble takes in the Terrace Gardens. There is a wide array of things to see in these Richmond gardens, much more that the Tramble allows. We would recommend taking your time and investigating them thoroughly.
The Tramble will take you to the top of the gardens though, where you can enjoy a spectacular view.
food and drink in richmond
There have been plenty of opportunities to stop for food and drink on the way around.
We love the pub scene in Richmond and would probably look for some British fare in one of the Riverside pubs. Away from pub scene we would recommend American-style Jackson+Rye (Hotham House, 1 Heron Square, Richmond TW9 1EJ | 020 8948 6951 | Website) and The Ivy Cafe (9-11 Hill St, Richmond TW9 1SX | 020 3146 7733 | Website) for something a little more up-market.
Drinks wise, the pubs win for us. We love the pubs on the Green we mentioned earlier and The Old Ship (3 King St, Richmond TW9 1ND | 020 8940 3461 | Website) lurking up one of the side streets there. If cocktails are more your thing we recommend trying the contemporary No.1 Duke Street (1A Duke St, Richmond TW9 1HP | 020 3841 6898 | Website).
